What you should look for in a consultant.

Did you ever had the experience where an insurance agent who is particularly aggressive about selling policies served you and was on your beck and call all day?
Sometimes they come across as excessive, annoying but you know at the end of the day that they can be counted on if you need help even on small things.
For business consulting it is pretty much the same. There will be times us as consultants are called up at 10pm at night to answer questions about whether $100 will make a difference in pricing for a market as it is particularly “urgent”.
Based on what our clients tell us, from positive and negative experiences, I would summarise your decision to engage a business consultant on the following premises;
1. Clarity
Your consultant firstly has to be clear about your business and where it can go. The ability to articulate plans clearly is an asset that not everyone has.
2. Availability
He/She also has to be available. Meaning once you are signed up and need the person’s advice, you know that person will respond promptly.
3. Experience
We boldly say that having a Masters’ degree unfortunately has no relevance to the industry. Emotional intelligence, grit, wisdom and creativity are things that schools do not talk about but necessary in consulting.
4. Vibe
This is probably the most superficial factor that you can’t measure. But your consultant is going to work with you for a while to develop your business.
So the vibe – whether you can get along, trust and respect your consultant are very important criteria.
Remember when you started your business based on a gut feel ? It’s pretty much like that.
There you have it! Hope this was useful to confirm some gut feelings you might have… and do call us if you need help!
