There are some ways you can grow your business without the major sacrifice of financial investment.
1. Organic Growth
This is simply good old fashioned putting in of your money and time to building your business in a new market.
Of course you don’t have to build everything from scratch if you can hire an experienced manager or experienced staff with a ready network in the industry you are in.
2. Franchise
Your local partner sets up a shop looking exactly like yours with your logo.
Typically this consists of an upfront franchise fee which includes training, the use of logo and materials and subsequently every month a percentage of royalty paid to you based on their revenue.
You can specify for how long this arrangement will be.
3. Licensing
Your local partner uses your intellectual property (i.p.) only. Like your books or training materials.
Typically this consists of an upfront license fee which includes training, the use of your i.p. and materials and subsequently every month a percentage of royalty paid to you based on their revenue.
You can specify for how long this arrangement will be.
4. Joint Venture
A partnership between you and the local partner where you negotiate how many percent to take of the company as well as the roles and responsibilities of you and the partner.
5. Investments
A person or company invests in your company. This is a pure financial transaction where you still carry out operations but stay accountable to the investor.

So where do we go from here?
We don’t want to sound conclusive here but the best node of growth we have seen in clients of different industries including f&b, retail, FMCG and education has been organic growth.
Close to nothing in the world can replace the culture that you have set in your company to make it successful and where it is today. Organic growth is easier as your staff are your own with no other priorities and there is an element of control that you have in the decision making process.
A client of ours in the snacks business from Indonesia conclusively also mentioned that having operated in 5 countries in South East Asia, the most successful are the ones that they own the office.
The rest that are partnerships or franchisees are difficult due to issues including misalignment of business interests, different values and different directions.
Not that we are discouraging you otherwise as we have also seen good success with the other options.
